Where we work

Breakfast Club is based in the Mtwara province of Southern Tanzania. Tanzania is the world’s seventh poorest country with around fifty percent of the population living below the poverty line. The Mtwara province is no exception and displays even higher degrees of poverty than some of the other region. Mtwara has been described as the ‘Siberia of Tanzania’ due to its distance from the main business districts. The development of infrastructure in Tanzania has, as yet, failed to effectively link the South with some of the most prosperous regions further north, especially around Dares Salaam.

The Mtwara province is desperately short of employment opportunities and many families rely on self-subsistence through agriculture. Nevertheless, both urban and rural households have extremely tight budgets and very few eat two, let alone three meals a day. This problem is one of the primary indications of how vitally important our project could be to the potential of today’s children in the Mtwara province. Additionally, our project could help change the face of the entire of the area.
